Marvel Universe – Avengers:Earth’s Mightiest Heroes #16

THE KREE EMPIRE COMES TO EARTH!
Ms. Marvel joins the Avengers against Ronan the Accuser.
Based on season two of the hit Disney XD TV show!
32 Pages / All Ages – $2.99

This is the second in a series of three covers I did recently for the comic book tie-in for the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes animated TV show.

Initially all I was told was that the cover was to feature “Ronan the Accuser and Captain Mar-Vell putting the earth on trial.”

Without any other specifics on the story, I wasn’t sure how to represent that idea visually? I asked “Would you want some kind of alien courtroom setting? Who other than Ronan and Mar-Vel would need to be on the cover?”

I was told “Let’s go a little more sci-fi here – Ronan and Captain Mar-Vell looking down on Earth, the Avengers preparing to defend it,” and that the Avengers to be included were Captain America, Ms. Marvel and Iron Man.

My first thought was to have the heroes in a “ready for a fight” pose with Ronan and Mar-Vell towering over them, looking judgmental. I wanted Earth in the background, which meant that our immediate location needed to be in open space or on a spaceship of some kind. If they were on a ship, what kind of ship was it? If they were in open space, are the Avengers characters wearing space suits? I was reluctant to solve these problems with specifics that wouldn’t correlate with the actual story.

I had a second take on the cover that gave more focus to the story’s “guest stars” Ronan and Mar-Vell, looking from their level down at the trio of heroes on some kind of platform with a protective force field dome and the Earth behind them. While this platform was likely to be specific only to the cover and not found in the story, this layout seemed to do a much better job of getting across the idea of Ronan and Mar-Vel presiding in judgement over Earth and the heroes. To strengthen this impression I put the heroes in shackles, and tried to make the platform a bit of Kirby-esque space sculpture but also bearing a resemblance to the top of a Grecian column, hopefully further evoking a courtroom ambiance.

Sketch B was chosen, so pencils and inks were pretty straightforward. I had a great deal of fun drawing Ronan and Mar-vell, especially.

OK, technically this came out last week, but I just found that out. I drew the lead 10-page story in this issue, featuring a battle between The Incredible Hulk and the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing! I didn’t draw this cover art, but this is the cover to be looking for if you want to find the issue in your local shop! Story by Christopher Yost, pencils by yours truly, and inks by Terry Pallot.

In addition to Dr. Banner and Mr. Grimm, the story also features Thor, the Grandmaster and Champion!

Busy busy busy

FCBD - Young Justice

FCBD - Young Justice

Since getting back from the Gallifrey One convention last month I’ve been ridiculously busy and haven’t had time to make any posts to this blog. I should be able to get some blog entries written up by the tail end of these week and get back in the game here. I’ve been busy with all good stuff, not the least of which has been my new inking duties on Young Justice in addition to the penciling I’ve been doing since issue #5.

There will be a Young Justice section as part of the DC Nation book DC Comics is producing for Free Comic Book Day in May. The Young Justice pages of the FCBD book are an early peek at the Young Justice #16 and feature Robin, Batman, Artemis and Green Arrow. The sequence is written by the usual team of Greg Weisman and Kevin Hopps, penciled and inked by me, and colored by  Zac Atkinson.

I just saw the color art on those pages and Zac has done it again – I can’t wait for everyone to see how great these pages look! (The tiny image of Robin above is about as much as I figure I can show you without getting in trouble!) I hope the FCBD exposure encourages more people to check out the regular series.

There’s great things coming up in Young Justice. The upcoming Atlantis 2-parter features the debut of my inking on the book (not counting covers which I’ve been inking since I started on the title), and features a ton of new characters. I’ve got lots of blog entries to do on recent covers, character designs, and all kinds of stuff from Young Justice.

I even did a 10-page story for the first issue of the new Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes book, based on the current Avengers animated TV series. (NOTE TO EDITORS: Hey, I CAN do comics not based on TV shows! Really!) It looks great, and I can’t wait for you all to see it. I can’t tell you what classic Marvel monster-villain it features, but his initials are F.F.F!

Anyway, it’s back to work for me right now, but keep an eye out for new entries very, very soon!

Looking forward to Hawkeye in the Avengers movie

Avengers Banner

(L to R: Nick Fury, Loki, Hawkeye, Black Widow)

Can’t wait to see how Hawkeye rails against the authority of Nick Fury and SHIELD. Will Pierce and Banner butt heads over medical opinions? Will he and Tony Stark go on a drinking binge together? Will Black Widow be safe from his lascivious advances? It’s gonna be great!
