Now taking Sketch Commission Requests!

I finally have a gap in my comics schedule and for a limited time am taking commissions for custom sketches. I get lots of requests outside of conventions, but am usually dealing with comic book deadlines that are too tight for me to consider additional work, so now’s your chance!

I am taking advance orders for Gallifrey One, Emerald City Comic Con, and C2E2, as well as orders to be sent by mail.

Gallifrey One (Pre-Order Deadline February 10)
February 17-19, 2017 – Los Angeles, CA
www.gallifreyone.com

Emerald City Comic Con (Pre-Order Deadline February 23)
March 2-5, 2017 – Seattle, WA
www.emeraldcitycomicon.com

C2E2 Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (Pre-Order Deadline April 14)
April 21-23, 2017 – Chicago, IL
www.c2e2.com

I will appearing at all three of those conventions and will be taking orders and commission sketches there, but my sketch list fills up FAST, so even if you’re hoping to see me there ordering your sketch in advance is the best way to make sure you can get the original art you want. Plus, for ordering and paying in advance, I’m offering a $20 discount on full-figure sketches or orders of $100 or more.

The same rate structure applies to artwork done on a sketch cover – but if I provide the comic there is a $5 charge for the book, and currently I only have the sketch variant of The Third Doctor #1.

My 2016 Hugo Eligible Fan Art

I’ve been contributing artwork to conventions for a really long time. As in, about two decades. Most notably as a CONvergence co-founder, I created the CONvergence mascot characters and over the years have produced a vast majority of the art for the convention. But I like to contribute to other conventions too. It’s just something I do because I love fan-run conventions and I love lending my skills as an artist to make those events a little more special and unique. I never really gave it a lot of thought outside of generally being proud of my work, and enjoying the community’s reactions to it.

So it’s fair to say I was surprised when a good friend suggested to me that these works are eligible for Hugo nomination under the Fan Artist category.

This is a great (if you’ll pardon my pun) illustration of the dichotomy inherent to being a professional artist who is involved with fandom. There’s this whole side of my life as an artist that is absolutely professional—yes, I get paid, under contract, to draw comic books. But then there’s also this significant side of my life producing artwork that is, well, not professional at all. It’s all about being a fan and contributing to fandom. And it honestly, really never occurred to me before that my non-professional works could potentially be significant enough to be recognized.

I understand it’s common for those with Hugo eligible work in a given year to do a post listing it. So this will be me doing that. I’ve never done this before so I hope it’s not too off-base.

CONvergence

The theme for CONvergence 2015 was Dystopia. Here is the art I did for the con in 2015.

Programming Guide Covers

I created the covers for the CONvergence 2015 programming guide and pocket programming guide (called “The Grid”; its cover always has a grid theme. It’s possible I’m fond of visual puns.)

T-Shirt

The CONvergence 2015 T-shirt art references 1984, but with Connie Mark 2, the (slightly evil) little sister of Connie, CONvergence’s mascot.

Badges

I created the art for three of the four CONvergence 2015 membership badges. (Space intentionally left at the bottom for names to be printed.)

Every year I create unique, custom badge art for every CONvergence Guest of Honor. Here are the Guest of Honor badges I made for CONvergence 2015. (Click here to read more about the process behind them.)

The ad I created for CONvergence 2016, which will celebrate the great and interesting modes of transportation in science fiction and fantasy. This appeared in the back of the CONvergence 2015 programming guide, and on the CONvergence website. Bonus points if you can name all the vehicles!

CONvergence 2016 Logo and Web Graphic

Every year I create a new custom logo to reflect CONvergence’s theme, and 2015 was no different. The logo and website header graphic must be created a year in advance of the con, so that they can be published in printed materials and go live on the website immediately after the convention. Here is the logo that I created for CONvergence 2016, pictured as part of the website header graphic that I also made.

Rocky Mountain Con

Rocky Mountain Con is a fan-run convention in Denver, CO that serves as a fundraiser for Aurora Rise, a charity established to support victims of the 2012 Aurora Theater Shooting. For their 2015 convention, I created this commemorative artwork for them to sell at their merchandise table, with 100% of the sales going to the con’s charity.

Midwest Comic Book Association

MCBA is a fan-run organization that produces two nonprofit comic cons in Saint Paul, MN annually. In 2014, Nick Post, the beloved founder and driving force behind MCBA, passed away unexpectedly. It hit the community very hard. This is a piece of artwork I produced for MCBA’s Spring con to memorialize Nick and to raise money for MCBA’s partner charity.

Gallifrey One

2015 was kind of a light year for me doing artwork for Gallifrey One, a fan-run Doctor Who convention in LA. I did draw this train sporting the seal of Rassilon, which the con used for the Gallifrey One 2016 (Station 27) ad in their 2015 programming book.

Other Fan Art

This is some other fan art I made in 2015. I put it in the art shows and/or display it in the artist alleys of conventions I attend.

The Adventure Continues: A Justice League Reunion Event – Fri. October 9, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Empire Stage 1-E

The league is back! For the first time in over a decade, the founding members of the acclaimed series Justice League will reunite at NYCC! Join Batman (Kevin Conroy), Wonder Woman (Susan Eisenberg), Superman (George Newbern), Green Lantern (Phil LaMarr), Hawkgirl (Maria Canals-Barrera), Martian Manhunter (Carl Lumbly) and legendary Voice Director Andrea Romano as they reminisce about their fondest memories from the show, answer questions from the Fans, perform a live table read from an original JL script and more. The Watchtower is calling – we’ll see you there!

Justice League Art Print

Wonder Woman voice actress Susan Eisenberg asked me on Twitter if I’d be interested in creating an art print to mark the occasion of the New York Comic Con 2015 Justice League Reunion. I don’t think I can quite communicate to you the enthusiasm with which I immediately began sketching. You see, that I drew a handful of Justice League Adventures comics is almost irrelevant next to what a MASSIVE FANBOY I am about the Justice League animated series. So, creating this art was a huge honor. I hope you like it, and that if you do, you take home a copy for yourself.

Justice League art print by Christopher Jones

I’ll have it available all 4 days (or until I run out!) at the usual convention price of $20. After the convention, it will join the rest of my prints on my Etsy store for $30. You’ll find me at New York Comic Con Artist Alley table D9. Here’s a map:

Now Taking Commissions by eMail – Limited Time Only

I get a lot of requests to do sketch commissions by mail from people that don’t have the opportunity to get one from me at a convention. I currently have a short window in my schedule that will allow me to do a limited number of sketches for fans.

I’m trying to do as many of these as I can in a limited amount of time so I need to keep it simple. Comic book heroes and villains only, sketches will be done in ink on 9″x12″ bristol paper. No sketch covers at this time.

Full Figure: $80 for the first character + $40 for each additional character

Head Sketch (shoulders & up): $60

Because this is being done by mail, I there will be a $10 addition to your total to cover shipping.

If you would like to request a sketch (or more than one), email me at chris@christopherjonesart.com. Tell me the character you want. Many characters have more than one look, whether it be different costumes or designs for animation (i.e. Young Justice, Batman: The Animated Series, etc.) Be specific about what you want. If you choose the Full Figure option I’ll draw your character in an action pose of my choosing, unless you specify what you want (leaping, running, throwing a punch, etc.). If you choose the Head Sketch option, I’ll try to come up with an expression that conveys that character’s winning personality. :)

If I’m able to do the commission you ask for, I’ll let you know by email and provide you with the PayPal payment information and confirm the price. You would then provide me with your shipping information when you make your payment.

I’ve only got so many slots available, so it’s first-come, first-served for as long as this window of opportunity lasts. I’ll post an update to this blog entry with the commission list is closed.

A Portrait Worthy of Svengoolie for C2E2 2015

The late night horror host Svengoolie has been the on-air persona of Rich Koz since the mid-70s, and fans of his show know that it features vintage horror films served with generous helping of cheesy jokes along with background information on the films he shows and their stars that conveys a real love of the material. Ever since Me-TV came into the Minnesota market a few years ago, I have made sure to catch the show whenever I could. I really enjoy it. I didn’t know that Svengoolie would be at C2E2 last year until the 11th hour, and wrote on my twitter that I hoped to get away from my own Artists Alley table long enough to visit Sven at his signing, but I was skeptical that I’d be able to. Lo and behold, Sven and his camera crew stopped by my table as they did a tour of the convention, capturing material to be used in upcoming episodes of the show! It was tremendously cool!

Svengoolie and me at C2E2 2014

Svengoolie and me at C2E2 2014

I did a little video with Svengoolie (which was really fun), and then gave him a gift of my Re-Animator print, which seemed like the most appropriate of the selection I had. Given the body of all ages and animation-based comics I’ve done I’m amused by how many people don’t know I got my start doing a lot of horror comics, including the original comic book adaptation of the Re-Animator film! Sven seemed to really like it, and I honestly don’t even remember that his crew was still filming when I gave it to him. I determined right then that if I saw Svengoolie again at C2E2 in 2015, I wanted to do something more to express my appreciation for the show.

It didn’t take me long to settle that would be fun to do a portrait of Svengoolie in a gothic, over-the-top haunted house kind of style. I got the idea of trying to evoke the style of Basil Gogos, who is best known for having done many great portaits of figures from classic horror as covers for Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine.

basil-gogos-0014 basil-gogos-0054 basil-gogos-0068
Svengoolie seemed like a fitting addition to that gallery of ghouls, and the piece would present an interesting challenge for me. It was stylistically worlds away from my usual work, especially since I typically do hand-drawn line art with color added digitally, as opposed to the rich paintings done by Gogos. That said, I was delighted with how the piece turned out and hoped Sven would be pleased.

Svengoolie - Framed prev

Hal reached out to Svengoolie producer Jim to share the finished artwork and see if it would be possible to surprise our favorite horror host with the gift at C2E2 this year. I spent the whole of Saturday at C2E2 2015 looking forward to Svengoolie’s visit after his scheduled signing. When team Svengoolie made their appearance, I was able to give Rich a framed copy of my Svengoolie portrait and he seemed delighted. I had a few extra copies for Jim and members of the Svengoolie crew, and made a point to get Sven’s signature on my own personal copy of the print for my living room.

Art on Svengoolie Set

The portrait as it now appears on the Svengoolie set. Thanks to my friend Tom Hogan for capturing the video for me to screengrab.

I’m pretty over the moon about this whole thing.

If you’d like your own copy of the Svengoolie portrait, yes, you can get one. If you can’t get to one of my convention appearances to get it from me in person, you can always purchase it from my Etsy store.

I’m looking forward to seeing Svengoolie again, but I don’t know if I can top this!
