Star Trek signing with Paul Cornell at Atomic Basement Comics

On Wednesday February 12, writer Paul Cornell and I will be signing our Star Trek: Year Five Valentine’s Day Special at starting at 7:00pm at Atomic Basement Comics.

I’m really proud of this book. It’s got a great script by Paul that has all the best, most charming aspects of James T. Kirk presented in a fresh, modern narrative. The story feels remarkably significant and life-spanning, while being told in only 20 pages. The interior colors are by my friend Charlie Kirchoff and letters by Neil Uyetake. And one of the variant covers (pictured) is by me, linework and color! I can’t wait for everybody to see this one.

Paul and I are signing at Atomic Basement Comics and then we’re off to the Gallifrey One convention this weekend at the Mariott Los Angeles Airport Hotel, where we will be talking about the book again as a part of the Current Star Trek Comics panel on Sunday afternoon at 2pm!

It’s a free event, so come see us!

Christopher Jones at Gallifrey One 2020

I am delighted to be returning as a guest to the Gallifrey One convention, February 14-16 at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel. I have a great time every year at Gallifrey One, and this is the first time I’ll be attending as a local, since moving to Los Angeles in December!

This year I will NOT have a table in the Dealers Room, but there will still be plenty of opportunities to see me and (if you are so inclined) buy my art!

Here’s my schedule:

Friday, February 14

1:00pm – Autographs

I’ll be signing autographs and selling prints in the Autograph area for two hours each day of the convention. Autographs are always free and I’m happy to sign items you already own. Stop by and say hello!

6:00pm – The Game of Rassilon

Christopher Jones • Dan Peck • Michael Nixon • Ben Paddon • Riley Silverman
Once more, we play our dangerous game, a game of chess against our old adversaries… wait. That’s Hunt for Red October. Sorry. This is silly Doctor Who speed role-playing in front of an audience. Come see the fun!

Saturday, February 15

1:00pm – Autographs

It’s the second daily autographic block. I should be there until 3pm. Come see me!

4:00pm – Taking Your Love of Doctor Who to the Next Level

Christopher Jones • Lauren Bancroft • Abie Ekenezar • Andy Hicks • Jennifer Picker • Brian Uiga • Kevin Wilcox
I started as a Doctor Who fan and now I draw Doctor Who comics! Crazy, right? Come here about the individual journeys of the panelists from Who fandom to something… more!

8:00pm – The Masquerade of Mandragora 2020, Featuring “The Time of the Comedy”

Christopher Jones • Tony Lee • Lauren Bancroft • Abie Ekenezar • Joseph Scrimshaw • Riley Silverman
Something funny will happen to fill time during the Masquerade judging. We hope.

Sunday, February 16

11:00am – Christopher Jones: Illustrating the Future

If I had titled this I would have called it Doctor Who: Heralds of Destruction – Live commentary. I see actors do live commentary on their TV episodes all the time at these conventions. Why can’t I do the same for my comic book work? I’ll be talking about my creative process and sharing some behind-the-scenes stories and easter eggs from the Third Doctor mini-series I drew, based on a story by Paul Cornell!

12:00pm – Autographs

Last chance of the weekend to come get something signed or buy one of my prints. Don’t miss out! (I’ll have to leave a bit before 2pm to get to my next panel…

2:00pm – Current Star Trek Comics

Paul Cornell • Jody Houser • Christopher Jones • Collin Kelly • Jackson Lanzing • Denton Tipton Paul and I will be talking about our brand-new Star Trek: Year Five Valentine’s Day special as part of a presentation on what’s happening with IDW’s Star Trek comics.
Again, I’m always happy to talk to fans and make new friends, so please come say hello. Autographs and photos are always free!

CONvergence Badge Art: #2008 Guest Badges – 4 of 4

We’re counting down to CONvergence 2012 on July 5-8, with the last batch of badge art for the massive number of Guests of Honor of CONvergence 2008.

#CVG2008 – Bridget Landry

Wally Wingert, with his obsession for the Adam West Batman again infecting his voiceover personas, this time his role as Jon Arbuckle on the new Garfield Show.

Marv Wolfman, who was only the writer when Dick Grayson got his first Nightwing costume in the pages of New Teen Titans.

And finally the badge for Jet Propulsion Laboratory rocket scientist Bridget Landry.

What’s that, you say? Bridget’s badge looks a little plain? She probably thought that, too when we first gave it to her, although she was too polite to say anything. But you see, we had a little surprise for her. When Bridget was first a Guest of Honor at CONvergence 2006, we learned that she was a cosplay maniac with a special love of original series Star Trek cosplay, appearing in several different spectacular costumes that weekend, all of her own creation. So what I did was I created this very simple badge for her featuring Connie, but then additional created several transparent overlays on lamination material, that featured paper-doll style costumes scaled and positioned to dress the Connie on her badge so she could cosplay WITH BRIDGET! These overlays were given to Bridget at the Guest of Honor Reception after she’d already gotten her badge and she was delighted!

The images below show the various cosplays provided on overlays to Bridget.

The three divisional Starfleet Uniforms were pretty basic.

These cosplay overlays were based on costumes I knew Bridget had: Yeoman Rand, Nurse Chapel, and Uhura’s Mirror Universe uniform.

And that’s finally the end of the #CVG2008 badges! On to #CVG2009!

If you’re coming to #CVG2012 be sure to look me up! I’ll be doing two signings and on a bunch of panels.

CONvergence Badge Art: #CVG2006

I’m counting down to CONvergence 2012 on July 5-8 this year, and sharing some highlights from past year’s badge art that I’ve done for the convention.

The 2006 theme was Boldly Go – a celebration of not just Star Trek (which was celebrating it’s 40th Anniversary) but all things Space Exploration.

We again had Registration Badges for three different age ranges of attendees, and this year I went with photo montages of spaceships. These looked great on screen, but in practice I thought these printed a little too dark, and were harder to see than I would have liked, especially in the varying lighting conditions around the convention and under the protective layer of lamination. I thought the previous year’s more brightly-colored badges worked better, so I resolved not to go this dark again.

#CVG2006 - ConCom Badge

#CVG2006 - Board of Directors

#CVG2006 - Board of Directors

Three more sets of badges. Exec of Duty is the term for the highest authority at the convention, a position held by members of the organization’s Board of Directors on rotating shifts.

Members of the Convention Committee got Cylons on their badges that year. You can see where I indicated the placement of the text that would indicate the ConCom member’s name and position title.

In a touch of self-deprecating humor, I gave my fellow members of the Board of Directors Borg badges that year. It went well with our ongoing Triumvirate of Seven running joke, where the seven of us had numbered designations of 1 through 7… of 3.

#CVG2006 - Performer Badge

#CVG2006 - Finance on Duty Badge

#CVG2006 - Finance on Duty

We have badges for Service Animals at the convention, indicating that an animal has been checked in by our Operations Department as a working animal assisting a convention member. That’s our mascot Connie’s robotic dog Sparky on the badge.

Our Performer badges that year featured a then-timely iPod joke.

And the Finance on Duty badge featured the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition. The visible rules are all taken from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, except for #34 which is a mantra of the CONvergence budgeting process.

If you’re coming to #CVG2012 be sure to look me up! I’ll be doing two signings and on a bunch of panels.
